We’re moving. Not to another state, city, or country. Just down the road a bit to a larger house, with a larger yard. It is truly our dream house - so much potential; so much history!

our new home

It was built between 1942 and 1950 and served as our town’s segregated schoolhouse until 1968 when it was closed forever. In 1971, it was moved to its’ present location and renovated to be a home. From then until about 5 years ago, it was the home of the assistant director of NASA here. He apparently really liked antiques, and installed a mahoghany banister from 1850’s New Orleans, as well as using an old church window from Cullman and 2 rescued windows from an old train car in the entryway, both stained glass. The bathrooms have what I call “English” toilets, in that the tank is set high on the wall, and there is a pullchain to flush. My son really loves that detail.

There is a lot to do for this house. Time has slowly been pulling it down the mountain, but the structural aspects are now fixed, so our main concerns are going to be getting the extremely flowery wallpaper out of my son’s room and painting all of the rooms the way I want. It is going to truly be a labor of love, though. We see this place as a house that our grandkids will come to visit. The land is over an acre - a rarity where we live, and it joins with National Landtrust forest which will never be built on.

We’ll be moving in next month, so if I don’t post, that’s why. I will do my best to post before and after pictures of the rooms.
